I’d like to share a new musical discovery that I came upon recently — a New York band called Battles. I first heard of them while interviewing Jose Medeles for a podcast last November. Then, in the past few days, I chanced upon some of their videos on YouTube. Extraordinary stuff.

This video in particular blew me away:

I’m specifically blown away by drummer John Stanier. He plays with so much ruthless abandon, and he’s clearly well-schooled in all manner of drum corps-style snare-drum rudiments. And he doesn’t just play — he attacks.

I suppose it’s no shock that I’d enjoy these guys so much — I’ve liked material by the members’ other bands — Don Caballero, Tomahawk and Storm & Stress.

It’s the kind of music that makes you want to run to the practice space and play for hours on end.

Much to love here, and the direction and cinematography of the above video is fantastic as well. The last two minutes put you in a hypnotic chokehold.
