Sometimes it seems that all sportswriters and sports PR people (especially those under 40) adhere to the exact same phraseology and shorthand — as though a compulsory phrasebook was distributed at Sports College. You can’t go an hour in football season without hearing the verb “scamper,” for instance.
The latest, most egregious example is the utterance “my goodness.” I don’t care to trace its origins (is it a tribute to an announcer who says ‘My Goodness” all the time?), but it’s all over the place lately. I hate it. To wit:
